Everything You Should Know About EV Charger Installation

Electrical, EV-Charging

Electric vehicles (EV) are already popular automotive options. However, as more people learn about the environmental advantages to electric vehicles and with additional EV options hitting the consumer market, there will likely be an even higher demand for these vehicles. Although the number of public EV chargers is also increasing, it’s convenient to have access to an electric vehicle charger at your house. Here are some things to keep in mind when considering adding an EV charger to your North Carolina home:

Are There Different Types of EV Chargers?

If you’re learning about EV chargers for the first time, you may not know that there are a few different types of electric vehicle charging systems. There are three main types, including Level 1, Level 2, and direct current fast charging (DCFC). Here’s some information on each one so you can tell what type of EV charger may work best for your electric vehicle charging needs at home:

  • Level 1: Level 1 is an electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE) that charges the electric vehicle through a standard 120-volt (120V) AC outlet. When charging a battery electric vehicle (BEV), it usually takes 40-50 hours to charge the vehicle to 80% from an empty battery. If you have a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the charging process can take 5-6 hours when charging to 80% from empty.
  • Level 2: A Level 2 EV charger offers a 240-volt (240V) charging service when used at your residence and can charge a BEV from empty to 80% in 4-10 hours. A PHEV takes 1-2 hours to charge to the same level.
  • DCFC: A high speed electric vehicle charger is a DCFC and is most likely in public places as opposed to being an at-home charging station. These high speed EV chargers charge a BEV up to 80% in less than an hour and might even charge in as little as 20 minutes.

Why Should You Have an Electric Charger Installed at Your Home?

There are many benefits to having an electric charger installed at your home if you have an electric vehicle. Some of the top benefits to installing an EV charger at your house include the following:

  • Convenience: When you have an EV charger installed at your house, you have the convenience of being able to plug in whenever you want to charge your vehicle. You don’t have to drive around looking for a public EV charging station. You can park your car for the evening, plug it in, and then wake up to a recharged battery.
  • Cost-efficiency: You can also save money by having an EV charger at home. You won’t have to pay for charging at a public EV charging station and can use the electricity at your house.
  • Improved property value: If you add an electric vehicle charger to your home, you can add value to the property. With electric vehicles becoming more popular, if you ever want to sell your property in the future, having an electric charger on the premises may help to boost its value.
  • Improved battery health: When you have an EV charger at home, you can take your time charging your car’s battery. This may help to improve the battery health by not using a DCFC system all of the time.
