How To Store Holiday Lights in 5 Easy Steps
The carols have been sung, the gifts unwrapped, the cookies were eaten and your holiday decorations are starting to find their way back into your storage containers.
Last month we shared how to safely hang your holiday lights because no one wants to start the holiday season with an electrical shock. Now, it’s time to share how to safely and conveniently store your Christmas lights so that it’s easier than ever to get out next year.
Your future self will thank you for taking a few extra minutes to do these simple steps.
Step 1:
Check to make sure your lights have survived this year’s holiday season. Are they burnt out? Do they need to be replaced? If so, do not put them back in the box— throw them away immediately.
Step 2:
Find a piece of cardboard that you can easily cut into. You likely have a few extra Amazon boxes lying around the house that will be perfect for this.
Step 3:
Cut a one-inch slit into opposite ends of the long side of the cardboard.
Step 4:
Stick one end of the lights into one of the slits and begin to wrap the lights around the rest of the cardboard. Stick the other end of the lights into the slit at the other end of the cardboard.
Step 5:
Wrap the light sin bubble wrap or some other protective layer so that none of the bulbs are damaged in your holiday storage containers.
Step 6:
Repeat steps 1-5 for all of your strings of lights!
Storing your lights this way will not only help you next year as you get them out but it also helps to prevent the wires from fraying or breaking by being rolled up into a ball.
